She Was Pretty

She was pretty. She spent half her life plucking, waxing, practising how to wear makeup, applying makeup, shopping for this, shopping for that, taking pictures of herself to show others just how good she was at dressing herself and how beautiful she looked with the makeup she wore, she wore clothes which hung gracefully around her frame, those perfect skinny jeans, that silk blouse which hung to her curves elegantly, those high heels which made her legs look more slender, the fake eyelashes, the fake hair extensions…but it’s ‘my body’ she said. ‘Its up to me how I dress myself, nothing to do with anybody else’ she said ‘il change one day if I’m supposed to’ she said.
Then one day she found herself being lowered into her grave, no fake eyelashes, or perfect fit jeans, no makeup, no heels, just a white sheet, being lowered into the final place her body would ever visit, where her body will slowly disintegrate to nothing as maggots feast on the skin she spent so many hours beautifying for the world. ‘Its my body’ she argued when some advised her and others criticised her, but it was never her body, her body always belonged to Allah swt, her body was a test from her Lord to see whether she spent her life calling it ‘her’ body or treating it like it was a body which belonged to Allah swt. ‘Indeed we belong to Allah and Indeed to Allah we will return’ (Surah Baqarah: 156)
May Allah swt protect us from this way of thinking and open our hearts and eyes to the truth that nothing belongs to us but with the permission of Allah swt. May we be protected from misusing our bodies being tempted by the Dunya. Ameen
